Sundays

Hey. How was your weekend? We had such a sunny one here in London! And while I was inside for quite a lot of it (more on that later), I still managed to sit outside and get a good dose of Vitamin D for as long as I could.

Do you ever get the Sunday blues? You know, feeling a little down in the dumps/panicky as soon as 4:00 p.m. rolls around and you realize that you haven't done as much as you wanted to and that your morning alarm is just a few precious hours away? No? Just me then.

I spent yesterday hunting for things to cheer myself up and it turns out that there were plenty.

I arrived home on Friday to find the sweet bouquet (don't you love the box it came in?!) underneath the stairs for me ... it was from Udita, just to "bring some cheer", as she said in the card. But the funniest thing was - the card had been handwritten by the florist in St. John's Wood (Drake Algar, in case you're wondering) but it contained some of our funniest and most cringe-worthy inside jokes! I can't believe the florist had to write that all out by hand ... it definitely gave me a good laugh.

And ...

Mother's Day in the UK is next weekend. It's totally confusing for me because Mother's Day in the US is in May! I try to send my mom a Mother's Day card on both dates, but I found this sweet one pictured above at De Beauvoir Deli (I think I'm their biggest customer lately), which I plan to send to my mother-in-law, who some of you know is like a second mother to me.

And ...

I never splurge on ice cream, but ... salted caramel? Yes, please. This cost me a pretty penny at £6 (I balk at spending £4 on Ben & Jerry's), but it was worth it. Or, as my friend Laura commented over on Instagram, I'm worth it. At least, I keep telling myself that. Ha!

What's the most expensive ice cream you've ever splashed out on? Also: pistachio gelato in brioche in Sicily.

Have a great week.

  1. Every Sunday is a bit of a panic for me and I end up thinking about what I haven't done all night. I recently got one of those wristbands that tracks your sleep and Sunday nights are always the worst, most restless nights because I dream about the work that I need to do and the training that I need to get done.

I think I need to find some of that ice cream because it's making my mouth water just looking at it.

    1. Hi Jen, that is tough - do you find that by the time your week starts, it isn't as bad as you imagined it on Sunday night? It's really hard not to think ahead ...I'm lucky in that my job isn't *that* stressful, so I rarely think of work before my head hits the pillow on Sunday evening, but I know that it's something that John deals with regularly. I feel like this Sunday night anxiety is something a lot of people struggle with, and I'm interested to see if anyone else has similar comments!

p.s. yes ... you NEED that ice cream. I finished about half of it myself already last night. Oops.

    2. It never is as bad as I imagined it would be - I do websites for a living, not exactly life or death situations I deal with here. I just like to worry about things that I can't possibly do anything about because that is sure to make everything much better.

Only half? If it were me, that would have been done before bedtime. Don't know if you order from Ocado but I just added some to our order and it's only £4.69 there - bargain!

  2. You most certainly ARE worth it, my dear! That niggling feeling on a Sunday is an all too familiar irritation, although I have to say, nothing compares to the hair-pulling, gut-wrenching Sunday dread I had as a teacher.

Your Sunday ice cream (ice cream sundae?) was most definitely matched by my slab of chocolate cake...

But, as Dan is always reminding me, we have a whole lot of good to focus on too xx

    1. Yes, John was just nagging me about looking for "bad" things yesterday! I was being a real grumpity grump.

Ice cream sundae is a pun I could have used ... and totally didn't. Darn! My Monday morning brain is not working properly today!

Your teaching allusions sound stressful; I would love to hear more about it when we next meet (soon)! xx

    2. Ha - I am clearly thinking more about ice cream than anything usefully work-related! I think sometimes it's just easier, or it's just closer to our conscious thinking, to focus on what makes us unhappy, rather than what we can do about it. I am exactly the same!

Urgh, teaching certainly gave me more physical and psychological issues than I could cope with, and I only did it for a short time! But I am more than far enough away from it now to share the horror stories and laugh... or at least grimace. Can't wait to see you again soon! xx

    3. Reason number #465 why we're friends ... you use words like "grimace" in a blog post comment. *applause*

  3. The Sunday blues. Aren't they terrible? I work from home and love what I do but I STILL get them. I think in a way it all relates back to being a kid and getting ready for school the next day, and we just never shake that feeling. And don't worry – I've spent at least £5 for organic vanilla ice cream at Whole Foods. Hoping yours was delicious!

    1. OMG ... don't. Even. I used to CRY on Sundays (I was such a baby - I still am ... actually, I think I might have cried last night), knowing that I had to go to school the next day. There's something about leaving the comfort and safety of being at home, somehow, and having to go into the big bad world that still plagues me today as an adult!

      Mmm ... vanilla ...

  4. I usually love Mondays, but are hating on them at the moment which turns Sunday a little rough - BUT before you know it, it's Tuesday!!
(Have you tried the Haagen Daas Salted Caramel. OMG)

    1. Too true, Emma! And ... because of you, my cursor hovered over the Haagen Dazs Salted Caramel option in my Tesco delivery basket last night ... opted for Ben & Jerry's instead as it was half price. Fail.

  5. *Raises hand* for Sunday night blues. It's a horrible feeling mainly because I'm just about feeling relaxed and before you know it, it's Monday again! Oh the vicious cycle. Ice cream helps though, and by the sound of it that ice cream was worth it?! I am also guilty of buying expensive treats. £10 for Godiva chocolate covered strawberries... oops. They were totally delicious though!

    1. Glad I'm not the only one! And ... omg, those chocolate covered strawberries! I think I remember getting them once for John as a treat, YEARS ago. I don't work far from their Covent Garden shop, so now you've got the wheels turning in my head ...! And yes, that salted caramel ice cream is *delicious*.

  6. OK so it may be Tuesday now, but this just gave me some much-needed cheer! Thanks Jaime x

  7. Glad your Sunday Blues faded away :) Surprises from friends are the best! I'm going to get my mom a UK Mother's Day card, but give it to her on the US date, ha. I've tried that ice cream! Got it from Deliverance. Have you ever used them? My favorite ice cream that I don't believe I'll ever see again used to be sold at (US) Whole Foods. But it hasn't been there the past couple of times I've gone. Tarte Tatin ice cream. Ugh...it was glorious.

    1. Tarte Tatin ice cream sound RIDICULOUS (in a good way!), Gianni! I haven't tried Deliverance yet, though I see their scooters zooming past all the time ... would you recommend it? How does it compare to, say, other food delivery services, do you think?

And on the Mother's Day cards ... I totally have to buy them now if I want to send it in May. Otherwise, I'm out of luck!

    2. I wholeheartedly recommend Deliverance! The food is great, and the service is friendly & fast -- what more could you ask for? It's honestly the best food delivery experience I've had since moving to the UK (which, granted, wasn't very long ago, but I've had a LOT of food delivered in the months leading up to having my own kitchen).

My mom will actually (fingers crossed) be here in May, so I'll get to deliver my card to her in person :D
